Reporters on the trail with Mitt Romney tell me that the new presence of the Secret Service has changed the nature of campaign coverage, creating the impression that Romney is already — or may very soon become — the Republican nominee.
“I think Romney reporters feel now more than ever like they’re covering the presumptive nominee — and they’re in this for the long haul,” one writes. “Everyone’s always sort of operated under the assumption that they might be covering him until November. Now it seems increasingly inevitable.”
“I think the Romney campaign may have even requested service to project that air of inevitability,” another suggested. (In an email, Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstron said he would not discuss issues around security.)
