Santorum Sweeps 3 States in Primaries; Romney Unable to Close the Deal

Less than a month before “Super Tuesday,” supposed frontrunner Mitt Romney was swept by Rick Santorum in Tuesday’s three GOP presidential contests.

Santorum picked up a perfect trifecta in Tuesday’s ongoing battle for the Republican presidential nomination. With no delegates at stake, the former Pennsylvania senator won big in Missouri and convincingly in Minnesota. But the biggest victory of the night came in Colorado, where Santorum upset Romney, a state the former Massachusetts governor overwhelmingly won in 2008.

“Thank you all so very, very much. It is great to be here,” the former Pennsylvania senator said Tuesday evening. “I just can’t thank the people of Missouri [enough] — we doubled him up here and in Minnesota.”

Rod Martin, president of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies, says Santorum ran virtually unchallenged in the three states as the other candidates did little campaigning there.

“Mitt, like Newt, didn’t contest these states,” Martin explains, “and Santorum contested them hard, really through his whole campaign [leading up] to them.”
